There will be a mayoral forum at 7 pm on Tuesday, October 15 in the Cowles Auditorium of the Humphrey School. The event is sponsored by the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition, Streets.mn, the Interdisciplinary Transportation Student Organization (ITSO), the Minnesota Urban Studies Students Association (MUSSA), UrbanMSP, and the Alliance for Metropolitan Stability.
The topic of the forum is the future of transportation in Minneapolis. Transportation is one of the most important issues facing Minneapolis. What will the next mayor’s positions be on supporting all modes of transportation? How can we accelerate transit ridership? How can we move Minneapolis toward sustainable active lifestyles? We hope the event will allow the mayoral candidates to express their plans to make it easier to move around Minneapolis.
The Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition is particularly interested in how the next mayor plans to make Minneapolis a place where everyone feels safe and comfortable cycling. This summer, City Council passed a resolution supporting the construction of 30 new miles of protected bikeways by 2020, but we've been sliding away from this goal. In Minnehaha Avenue, we missed a once-in-55-years opportunity to build a world-class cycle track on the street, and recent developments in the Southwest LRT planning process threaten the heavily-used bike path in the Kenilworth corridor. What are the mayoral candidates' plans to move Minneapolis forward?
The forum will be moderated by Paula Pentel, coordinator of the Urban Studies Program at the University of Minnesota.
