On Sunday June 4th, from 11 AM to 5 PM, Lyndale Avenue will be temporarily closed to motorized vehicles and transformed into a bustling, colorful community space for folks to explore their neighborhood and local businesses while engaging with their public spaces in a completely different way.

Open Streets Lyndale is in its 7th year and we’re excited to announce that we’ve extended the route!

You can now enjoy 4 miles of family friendly fun on the street all the way from the Wedge Co-op on 22nd down past Minnehaha Creek to 54th Street.

Be sure to check out the entire route so you don’t miss any of the excitement!

Here’s just a few highlights to ignite the anticipation.

  • On the South End we’ll have a pet zone, neighborhood hub, and lots of family friendly activities.
  • On 41st Street there will be even more activities for the kids at the special Kids Zone as well as a petting zoo!
  • Near Lake Street there will be lots of food, live music, and also *wrestling, skateboarding, and log rolling*
  • We’ll even have folks practicing yoga near the greenway!

Volunteer at Open Streets!

An extended route means that we’ll have more opportunities than ever for folks to get involved in the event as a volunteer, and score a free T-shirt! Here’s just a few of the available volunteer positions that we’re looking to fill. Volunteering at Open Streets is a rewarding way for people of all ages to engage with their community - families too! You can volunteer for just a couple of hours, and spend the rest of your day enjoying the event. Check out which role appeals to you most and sign up to help us bring the event to life.

Street Ambassadors

A very important volunteer position, street ambassadors are the official hosts of Open Streets and help to monitor street safety. They will be stationed at intersections along Lyndale to help keep cars off the route, count participants, answer questions, and ensure that everyone has a fun and safe Open Streets experience. They’ll be equipped with chalk, bubbles, jump rope and other supplies to bring energy to the entire event. This position is perfect for families or people who want to volunteer together - just indicate on the sign up forum that you would like to be stationed as a group!

Planeteers

These folks help Open Streets show integrity in our commitment to sustainability, healthy living, and vibrant neighborhoods. They’ll make sure we leave no trace by picking up trash along the route and sorting through waste in bins during the event. We’ll provide gloves, bags & pinchers for our Planeteers, but if you want to add some extra flare to your role you could even bring along some rollerblades or a skateboard to snatch up trash with zeal.

Pop-Up Crew

We’re looking for volunteers to do outreach and help cyclists try out the pop-up protected bikeway! This group will engage in conversations with the community about the benefits of protected bikeways and collect postcards in support of safer streets for all. This position is especially great if you’re an enthusiastic and outgoing person as you’ll be chatting with folks all day long.

10:45-1:15pm, 1:00pm-3:30pm, 3:15pm-5:45pm

If these don’t sound like a good fit, we have a handful of other volunteer roles available.
