This Saturday, March 4 is the last day to comment on a critical Master Plan that will create a 25-year vision for Lake Calhoun/Bde Maka Ska and Lake Harriet.
There is a lot to be excited about the plan, but also some things we think are important to comment on about the plan. We hope you will comment! Your comments can make a difference.

- The plan currently calls for removing the bicycle connection under West Lake Street, and instead moves the bicycle crossing to an at grade Lake Street crossing. We urge the Minneapolis Park Board to reconsider the plan’s call to eliminate the bicycle trail under the West Lake Street Bridge alongside the lagoon. This is a vital, two-way, off-street bicycle connection that should be maintained. Many cyclists, including children, will not be comfortable crossing Lake Street, a major road with heavy vehicular traffic.
- We support continuous two-way bicycle trails around the Chain of Lakes. This would help prevent conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians, particularly on the north side of Bde Maka Ska where the trail connects to other facilities.
- We support the restoration of the of the name Bde Maka Ska to what many people today call Lake Calhoun. The restorative justice work being done to honor the historic and present connection to the water and land with the Dakota people.
- We support closing Lower East Harriet Parkway to motor vehicle traffic to create more space for people walking and biking, as well as more parkland. It would allow a two-way bike path connecting the trails on Minnehaha Parkway to the bike facilities on Roseway Road and from there to West 40th Street, Bryant Avenue, and the rest of the city system.
The Park Board is taking your input until this Saturday! The Sierra Club North Star Chapter has set up an easy to use action alert form to submit your feedback, or you can submit comments to the Park Board directly through their online survey form.
